Stocks Retreat as Fed Minutes Signal More Hikes; Small Caps Hit Hardest

U.S. equities closed lower Wednesday after Fed minutes revealed policymakers still see room for another rate hike, though the timing remains unclear. The Russell 2000 led declines with a 1.31% drop as small caps bore the brunt of the risk-off sentiment, while the 10-year Treasury yield eased to 5.30% after a well-received auction.

🇺🇸 US Session Overview

The S&P 500 dipped 0.22% to 7,801.77, with tech holding up better than industrials as the Nasdaq 100 fell just 0.21%. The Dow Jones underperformed with a 0.66% decline to 51,179.87, dragged by financials and energy stocks. Market breadth was weak, with decliners outpacing advancers nearly 3-to-1 on the NYSE. Fed minutes showing lingering inflation concerns overshadowed a solid 2.0% rebound in German industrial production, which had briefly lifted European markets earlier.

📅 Economic Calendar Highlights

The 10-year Treasury auction drew strong demand at a yield of 5.30%, helping ease bond market jitters after recent selloffs. Crude inventories surprised with a 3.186M barrel draw versus expectations for a build, though WTI still fell 0.57% to $88.93. Consumer inflation expectations rose to 3.9%, while credit growth slowed sharply to $8.28B from $17.74B prior - a potential warning sign for spending.

💱 FX & Commodities

The Dollar Index edged higher as the EUR/USD fell 0.17% to 1.1198 despite strong German data. Precious metals took a hit with gold plunging 1.34% to $4,131.20 and silver down 2.00%. Crypto saw steeper losses as Bitcoin dropped 2.39% to $83,515.67 and Ethereum tumbled 4.54%. Natural gas bucked the trend with a 3.02% gain amid cooler weather forecasts.

As Asian markets prepare to open, focus turns to China's return from holiday and whether the PBOC will intervene to support the yuan. Thursday's initial jobless claims and PPI data will test the Fed's higher-for-longer narrative, with earnings season kicking off in earnest next week.
